How they were read

MIDI Implementation Chart, one page, Version 1.11 dated October 1 2025: p. 1, which is the whole of the control map and the note table. Reference Manual, 75 pages, the edition Roland names 03 and marks "Version 1.20 and later": the tracks on printed p. 14, the step velocity on pp. 23 and 28, the MIDI settings on p. 47, the step shortcut on p. 74 and the specifications on p. 75. And Roland's own system program page, for the version history.

SIXTY-SIX CONTROL CHANGES, EVERY ONE MARKED BOTH WAYS. Fifty-two of them belong to the ten instruments the chart names - BD, SD, LT, HT, RS, HC, CH, OH, CC and RC - and fourteen to the machine as a whole. The four with seven parameters each, tune, decay, mix, three controls and level, are the ones the manual calls layer tracks; the six with four, tune, decay, one control and level, are the single tracks. "The TR-1000 features four layer tracks (BD, SD, LT, HT) and six single tracks (RS, HC, CH, OH, CC, RC). Layer tracks use two sets (A, B) of sound generator, filter and amp sections. Single tracks use one set" (p. 14), which is why only four of them have a mix control.

THE MARKS ARE PLAINER THAN THE INSTRUMENT. Every one of those sixty-six rows reads o in both columns, and the manual gates all of them behind two settings that are not in the chart at all: "Tx Edit Data OFF, ON. Specifies whether CC messages are transmitted (ON) or are not", and the same for "Rx Edit Data" (p. 47). Notes, program change and the real-time messages each have their own pair as well.

CC 46 TO 63 ARE THE LSB PARTNERS OF CC 14 TO 31 IN THE SPECIFICATION, and this chart gives them parameters of their own - the same trap the Digitakt II sets. It avoided it once and not twice: the run 32 to 45, which would collide with 0 to 13, is left empty, and then 46 to 63 is used in full. CC 88 is the one number missing from the otherwise solid run 80 to 91, and the chart does not say why.

THE LABELS ARE THE CHART'S OWN WORDS, in its own capitals, because the remark column is all it gives: "BD TUNE", "SD CTRL1", "MASTER FX CTRL3" (chart p. 1). The manual names none of these numbers, so there is nothing to reconcile them against.

ELEVEN INSTRUMENTS HAVE NOTE NUMBERS AND THEY ARE DEFAULTS. The chart's note table gives three columns - Note Number, Note Number (Layer A only), and Note Number (Layer B and Alt.) - and footnotes all of them: "These note numbers are configurable on MENU>SYSTEM>MIDI>Inst Note" (chart p. 1), which the manual confirms under its own Inst Note setting: "Specify the MIDI note number for each track's instrument, instrument alternate sound, and TRIGGER OUT" (p. 47). voices below holds the first column. The other two are recorded here because the format has one map and this instrument has three: Layer A only - BD 35, SD 40, LT 41, HT 48, and a dash for every other instrument. Layer B and Alt. - BD 99, SD 104, LT 105, HT 112, RS 56, HC 54, CH 44, OH 58, CC 61, RC 63, and a dash for TRG.

THAT SECOND HEADING IS WRONG FOR SIX OF ITS OWN ROWS. Only the four layer tracks have a Layer B; the six single tracks have one set of sections and no second layer, so for them the column can only mean the alternate sound. And for the four that do have a Layer B, the chart puts the layer and the alternate sound in one column, so nothing says whether they are the same note or two the chart has run together.

TWO CHANNELS, NOT ONE, and this format holds one range for both. "Pattern Ch. 1-16 ... the MIDI transmit/receive channel of the pattern sequencer" (manual p. 47), default 10, and "Kit Ch. 1-16 ... the MIDI transmit/receive channel for program change messages that switch kits" (manual p. 47), default 1 (chart p. 1). So the controls and the notes arrive on one channel and the kit changes on another, and midi.channels records the span each may take.

THE SECOND MIDI MODE IS UNPUBLISHED. "MIDI Mode ... Single Ch. (Single Channel): Uses the MIDI channel specified in the Pattern Ch. parameter. Each Track Ch. (Each Track Channel): Splits each track into its own MIDI channel. See MIDI Implementation Chart for detail (Roland website)" (p. 47). The chart it names is the one above, which is nine releases older than the mode and says nothing about it. So which channel each track takes in that mode is not published, and nothing here claims it.

THE CHART AND THE MANUAL DISAGREE ABOUT VELOCITY, and both readings are left standing. The chart's Velocity row gives "o 9nH v=80" transmitted against a bare "o" recognised, which reads as a machine that sends one fixed velocity and accepts any - the TR-8S's chart says the same of it. The manual describes the opposite: a velocity per step, "The velocity range is 1-127" (p. 23), a "Curve" of -64 to +64 for it (p. 28), and a shortcut to adjust the velocity of a step (p. 74). note_on: received is what both agree on; what this instrument transmits is not recorded, because the two documents cannot both be right.

CHECKED AND ABSENT: system exclusive, both aftertouches and pitch bend, each marked x in both columns. Every Aux message is x in both columns as well - All Sound Off, Reset All Controllers, Local On/Off, All Notes Off, the four mode messages, Active Sensing and System Reset - so a note left sounding by this instrument cannot be stopped over MIDI by any standard means.

THE CHART'S HEADER CALLS IT A RHYTHM PERFORMER AND THE MANUAL'S COVER CALLS IT A RHYTHM CREATOR. Neither document mentions the other's name for it. And the chart carries the usual four-mode legend at its foot while having no Mode block at all: Roland replaced the basic channel and mode pair with Pattern Channel and Kit Channel, and left one "Altered" row inside the second of them.

CHECKED AND ABSENT: NRPN. The chart has no row for it and the manual never mentions it, and the chart's Control Change row names every number the instrument uses, among which an NRPN's 98, 99, 6 and 38 are not, nor an RPN's 100 and 101. That is the 1.11 chart, so it speaks for the single-channel mode alone: the MIDI MODE that 1.20 added, which puts each track on a channel of its own, points to a chart Roland has not published, as the paragraph on it above says. No release note since 1.11 names a controller number.

NOT RECORDED: the four jacks that are not MIDI. This instrument has trigger and CV connectors and a DIN SYNC output, and no field here holds them.
